Lactation Cookie Recipe
This is really a cookie recipe for everyone if I’m being honest, however it gets its fancy lactation title because it contains galactagogues, which are substances - generally food, herbs or medications - that increase breast milk production.
I’ve used rolled oats, flaxseed meal, and brewers yeast in this recipe, which are common food galactagogues you may see in post-partum and breastfeeding products. Herbal galactagogues I prescribe clinically include goat’s rue, fenugreek, fennel, nettle, and vervain.
These cookies make an amazing snack for everyone! You certainly do not need to be breastfeeding to make and enjoy these morsels. I’ve been having them in between meals or as dessert, often with a big dollop of full fat yoghurt and berries on top. I think my version tastes like a combination of baked oats and a chewy Anzac biscuit.
Ingredients:
1 & 1/2 cups rolled oats
3/4 cup desiccated coconut
3/4 cup buckwheat flour
3 tablespoons brewer’s yeast
1/4 cup ground flaxseed
3/4 cup powdered sweetener - I have found both xylitol and coconut sugar to work well. You could also use half/half
1 heaped teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cardamom
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup goji berries
3/4 cup dark choc chips
1 cup almond or coconut milk
1/2 cup melted butter or coconut oil
Method:
Heat your oven to 170 degrees (conventional) and line 2 baking trays with baking paper/silicone mats
Add all of the dry ingredients to a large bowl and mix well
Add the wet ingredients into a smaller box and whisk to combine
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and gently fold to combine. Let sit for 10 minutes so the liquid starts to absorb
Oil your hands and scoop the mixture using a spoon onto your tray. Press down on your cookies lightly so they flatten
Bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Check and bake for 5 more minutes if you like them a bit firmer
Remove when ready and let cool completely before storing in the fridge or freezer. Enjoy!
